Australia’s domination by US imperialism

Vanguard April 2011 p. 3

The depth of Australian government’s subservience to US economic, political and military interests was recently exposed in a string of shameful acts of betrayal of Australia’s sovereignty.

If anyone needed convincing, they would not need to look any further than the latest sycophantic performance by our Prime Minister during her recent visit to the US for the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS treaty. It was followed by the Foreign Affairs Minister Rudd’s grandstanding on behalf of US and European imperialisms preparing to attack and invade Libya. The political servility of Gillard, Rudd, and the cohort of ALP and Coalition parliamentary politicians is only a symptom of a much deeper master-servant relationship between US imperialism and Australia.

Gillard’s obsequious performance in the US was scripted for one purpose only. It was designed to reassure the US imperialist masters that their economic dominance in Australia is safe, and our role as America’s most loyal deputy sheriff is guaranteed. US imperialism was left in no doubt that its economic and military supremacy in Australia will be protected by its puppets in government, even when it is not in the interests of the people.

The disgraceful grovelling by the Australian Prime Minister on her recent trip to the US sent a shudder through most Australians. Gillard’s tearful declaration of her undying admiration for the neo-conservative, ultra-reactionary war-monger Ronald Reagan disgusted many Australians. The fawning and the crawling before Obama and US Senators drove even apologists and supporters of US imperialism to cringe and embarrassment.

Gillard’s public waxing lyrical about the superiority of corporate America was beyond belief. This is the country with the highest level of poverty and homelessness in the developed world. This is the most despised and aggressive imperial power that unleashes and bankrolls brutal wars of aggression around the world, overtly and covertly overthrows elected governments and tramples on human rights and the sovereignty of countries.

Contrast this slavish loyalty to US imperialism by Australia’s successive governments to their treatment and betrayal of decent Australian citizens, Julian Assange, David Hicks and Mamdouh Habib.

WikiLeaks has recently exposed some key ALP and union leaders beating a well trodden path to the US embassy to report on Australia’s internal political, military and economic matters and receive instructions from their masters.

Australia’s foreign policy is enmeshed and deeply integrated into the US war machine. The US-Australian alliance has one purpose only, and that is for Australia to provide a facade of legitimacy for America’s murderous wars of aggressions.

Behind Australia’s subservience to the US is the economic domination of Australia by imperialism.US neo-liberal policies of imperialist globalisation have led to decimation of Australian manufacturing industry jobs, privatisation, deregulation of Australia’s banks and financial industry. The Australia US Free Trade Agreement in 2004 opened up Australia to more foreign corporate takeover of the country. It continues with the push for more conditions favourable to US imperialism under the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement.

The propaganda machine of local media lackeys of constantly pumps out ideas of Australia’s unavoidable dependency on the US superpower for protection and economic and cultural superiority. It infers that the Australian people are not capable of making decisions on what is best for the country and will always need to look up to a big power for instructions. What a put-down of Australia’s working people, intended to keep Australia under the heel of US imperialism! Patriotic Australians reject this dependency and look for ways to put an end to it.
