Merchants of death

Vanguard April 2013 p. 10

Some raw statistics on global arms sales clearly demonstrate that imperialism cannot afford to exist in a peaceful world, and in fact profits from a situation of permanent war and the threat of war.

A recent report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) lists the 100 top weapons manufacturers in order of sales for 2011.

Five of the top six were US companies, with US imperialism accounting for 44% of all global arms sales. The US has a war budget of US$712 billion.

Lockheed Martin was first (US$36.3 billion), followed by Boeing (US$31.8 billion), then the British BAE Systems (US$29.2 billion), General Dynamics (US$23.7 billion), Raytheon (US$22.5 billion) and Northrop Grumman (US$21.4 billion).

The report did not include data from China, as the information was not yet readily available, however SIPRI lists China as accounting for about 4% of global sales in the period 2007-11, while the US is listed at 30%, Russia at 24%, Germany at 9% and France at 8%.
